About Alaska Mountaineering & Hiking
Founded by Paul Denkewalter, Alaska Mountaineering & Hiking (AMH) opened its doors in Anchorage in 1974. For over 40 years, AMH has been a leading retailer for outdoor gear in southcentral Alaska, specializing in technical climbing and Nordic skiing equipment. AMH strives to be the go-to resource in Alaska for the highest quality outdoor and expedition gear, with a focus on providing tailored, expert advice from a knowledgeable staff. In 2017, AMH’s General Manager, Jason Buttrick and his wife Brita Sonerholm, worked with Denkewalter to purchase the company, seeking a loan from Alaska Growth Capital to do so. Buttrick’s 10-year tenure at AMH and experience as a mountaineering guide who has led climbers to the summit of Denali make him a great fit to lead the business for years to come.

In 2018, Alaska Growth Capital provided Alaska Mountaineering & Hiking, LLC with an SBA loan so the new owners could purchase the business and real estate.
